Captain Marvel Movie Review

Captain Marvel English  Movie Review

The primary intention of the latest Marvel film from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Captain Marvel is to lay a solid platform to Avengers Endgame so that the titular character gets an introduction and a strong build-up to take on the might of Thanos. We all know how Infinity War finished off. Nick Fury sends a distraught message to Captain Marvel for help and if we straightaway sees this character in the Endgame, the impact such an introduction creates is very minimal. To tide over the possibility of such a situation, Marvel have come up with this flick to give a background about who Captain Marvel is and how she acquired the superpower. But in that process, the film entertains and offer fun. There is nothing new or exciting about the story which is quite ordinary but somehow the film for me was passable enough.

Coming to the subject, as I said the primary motive behind this project is to provide an outline about who Captain Marvel is, what are her past and how she attained such a power. That's what the film narrate. So we have Carol Danvers who is a soldier of an alien race called Kree. She has a strong sense or feel about a connection that she shares with Earth but somehow cannot recollect how it is as her memory has been completely wiped off. During a battle, she lands in Earth and met with Nick Fury. The duo then tracks the past and origin of Carol.

The film consumes some amount of time during the initial stage to start discussing the central thread which is to head into the background story of Danvers. Once that begins,  the film attain some sort of momentum. And the introduction of Fury which was a bit too late bring in lot of relief as the fun part begins once he lands. On the weaker side, the poor or rather underdeveloped antagonist character is something that deglamorized the whole film. Along with that, the story sans any freshness is also a weaker link. There are no plenty of action sequences one would have expected from a superhero film. Whatever is there are mostly confined to space wars and have been done well. Visual effects have a major role to play in the film and the whole CGI team deserve appreciation.

Brie Larson who is an academy award winner for her performance in Room steps into the shoes of a superhero and just about manage to get the pass mark as the titular character. The one who gets the maximum cheers and clap of the audience without doubt is Samuel Jackson (who has been digitally de-aged by atleast 25 years) whose screen presence was huge. His character Fury bring in lot of fun to the proceedings in an otherwise serious setup. Rest of the actors could not make much of an impact except for Jude Law who did the role of Yon-Rogg, the commander of Starforce and also the mentor of Danvers.

Captain Marvel may not be the best of superhero film from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and has shortcomings aplenty. But nevertheless it has answers to many questions and doesn't fail to entertain within the framework of the story around which it is woven. It was a passable film for me. And don't miss those post credit scenes especially the mid-credit scenes which is worth the wait.
