When one talks about ensemble dramas in movies that
portray romance, love, relationships (both marital and extramarital) and
breakdown of relationships in a bigger and wider canvas, the name that
immediately comes to mind is that of Karan Johar. After a four year break from
direction, KJo as he is fondly called returns to directing yet another
Bollywood flick in which he is in his familiar territory.
Ae
Dil Hai Mushkil has a complication in its title if we are to look into its
meaning as the title if converted says "This heart is complicated" .
Well, the complication just doesn't end up there as it is more or less shifted
into the reel life relationships of the three pivotal characters too. The film
dwell upon love, lust, friendship and heart break just like any other KJo movie
and tell us to celebrate each of these three aspects.
Ayan
and Alizeh portrayed by Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma are the two characters
around which the story unfold and the movie basically depict their relationship
which is friendship for one and love for the other. Ayan who is immature in
nature is a student of MBA pursuing his studies in UK while Alizeh is more
matured than the male lead is the girl whom Ayan meets and fall in love with.
Their break ups and reunion form the crux of the story that has Aiswarya Rai's
character Saba enter at some stage quite late in the film.
ADHM
has an ordinary screenplay with all the elements that one would expect from
Karan's school of movie making. Director has borrowed many aspects from his own
previous movies and the drama just recreate scenes bringing back memories of a
Kal Ho Na Ho or a Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani and many other flicks. The plot
develops at a very snail pace and we get to know where the film is heading up
to as the story lacks any sort of freshness in it. But the execution matter the
most and this aspect puts the movie in an average zone.
Ranbir
and Anushka occupy bulk of the scenes. A lengthy role for both of them which
they have done meeting the demands of the character. Ranbir's character has
close resemblance with some of the roles he has played before but still he was
able to bring in some fresh appeal to Ayan. Anushka was equally good and she
was able to bring in some coolness and charm to the role.
Aiswarya
Rai's character was introduced when the break up between Ayan and Alizeh happen
and she looked really hot and seductive and conveyed what was intended from
that character though it was a character that appears quite late and vanished
abruptly. Anyway leaving aside that, she was apt in that role that had some
work on the seduction side. Fawad Khan in an extended cameo was good while
KJo's favorite actor SRK makes a brief appearance. Alia Bhat too join the party
in a guest role that was limited to a single scene.
Technically
speaking, ADHM has an elaborate and grand look which is nothing new for a Karan
Johar film. Beautiful frames, thanks to excellent camera work. Music from
Pritham will also grab your attention and the the soundtracks were highly
impressive. Background score was not gelling with the scenes initially but it
was back to normal thereafter.
So
in totality, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is a movie that has the Karan Johar stamp all
over it. The drama, the sentiments, romance and breakdowns are all we have seen
from the director in different formats with the addition of lust and seduction
which was a new and welcome addition to KJo kitty. Personally, for me it was an
average experience watching the movie that doesn't have anything fresh to tell,
with the major highlights being performances, music and technical aspects.
